6월 7, 2025, Double Spiral Staircase, Graz Castle
The Graz double spiral staircase, officially known as the Twin Spiral Staircase, fascinated me. Also called the Reconciliation Staircase, it consists of two opposing staircases that briefly merge on each floor, then separate and rejoin. It is open to the public, and you can walk up and down the stairs (free of charge). It is the most important staircase in the architecture of Central Europe. However, it is not the only one, nor the oldest of its kind. It is carved from sandstone. It is located in Graz Castle, which houses the state government. Opening hours: Daily, 7:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

A guided tour is mandatory for a visit to the state rooms. It costs €18 for adults, and the park entrance fee of €2 is deducted. Exciting and very educational, the other three museums are included in the price. The coin museum is particularly recommended, where you can learn a lot about the history of money and Balthasar von Eggenberg, the great-grandfather of the owner of the palace and builder of the previous castle.

The Graz double spiral staircase, a twin spiral staircase (that is its official name), was built by stonemasons in the years 1499/1500 during the reign of the German king and later emperor Maximilian I by an unknown master builder from a medieval construction workshop in the Graz Castle.

Graz Castle is located in the east of the old town of Graz, near Graz Cathedral, and was built from 1438 by Duke Friedrich V, later Holy Roman Emperor Friedrich III. Due to its low defensive value, the castle was connected to the fortress on the Schloßberg via a hidden passage. From 1564, Graz was the capital of Inner Austria and the castle became the seat of the Inner Austrian Archdukes. Due to this position, it was rebuilt and enlarged. After Archduke Ferdinand II was crowned Emperor in 1619 and moved to Vienna, the castle lost its function as the seat of the sovereign and was neglected.

The clock tower standing on the Schlossberg is the landmark of the Styrian capital and can be seen from many corners of the old town. I recommend you come here on a warm summer evening and take a snack with you. Then at sunset you can enjoy dinner with the best company with your friends and the beautiful view.

Eggenberg Castle is located west of Graz's old town. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is therefore particularly worthy of protection. The castle gardens are beautifully laid out and invite you to take a stroll. You can find opening times and admission prices on the website: https://www.museum-joanneum.at/schloss-eggenberg-prunkraeume-und-gaerten/ihr-besuch/tickets-und-oeffnungszeiten

In winter, the rooms of the castle are not accessible, only the castle park, where peacocks stroll around showing their magnificent feather fans. Admission is free for members of the Salzburg Museum Association.

Sankt Martin Castle was rebuilt in 1557 into a Renaissance castle. However, it is mentioned in documents as early as the first half of the 11th century.

11월 12, 2022, Schloss Mühlegg
Schloss Mühlegg, also spelled Mühleck, is a castle in the market town of Gössendorf in Styria. Its history goes back to the middle of the 14th century. The astronomer Johannes Kepler lived in this castle for a short time. Since 1974 it has been used by the Styrian Chamber of Commerce as a boarding school for apprentices. About history View of the castle from the courtyard side A mill was first mentioned in 1355 at the location of the later castle, to which it also owes its current name. Until 1575 the farm belonged to the Grazer Hubamt (financial authority) and in that year came into the possession of the miller Jobst Müller. In 1597 the astronomer Johannes Kepler married Müller's twice widowed daughter Barbara. Müller had an astronomical tower built for Kepler, which was demolished in 1868. Kepler lived in the residence until 1599, but then had to leave the country because of his Protestant faith. In 1603, Michael Müller added the suffix "von und zu Mühleck" to his name. Later he was raised to the hereditary knighthood and the estate was freed from the usual conditions and taxes. Müller's heirs sold the castle in 1642 to Weikhart Fettauer, the owner of Alt-Sturmberg Castle. He sold it to Georg Andree von Schrampf in 1657. Schrampf in turn passed it on to Baron Johann Gabriel von Maschwander in 1661. Hans Friedrich Graf Galler bought the property in 1664, but accumulated such high debts in the years that followed that after the death of Countess Anna Theresia Galler in 1733, it was confiscated and auctioned off in 1741. At the auction, Rudolf von Streitz was awarded the contract. After Streitz, there were frequent changes of ownership. From 1931 until their expropriation in 1940, the Freiherren Berger-Waldenegg owned Mühlegg. They were succeeded by Alfred Graf Doret until 1959. After 1959, the Christian World Mission housed a branch in the castle building. The Styrian Chamber of Commerce has been using the castle as a boarding school for apprentices since 1974, for which purpose it was converted and other buildings were newly constructed.
