Steiner Gate “Landmark of Krems” The Steiner Gate is the landmark of Krems and the only remaining of the four former city gates. The main tower, dating from the late 15th century, bears a series of inscriptions on its exterior, including the motto AEIOU (All the earth is subject to Austria) in memory of Frederick III. Three coats of arms from 1756 adorn the city entrance: on the left, the one granted by Emperor Frederick III, still valid today, depicting the crowned double-headed eagle on a black background; on the right, the coat of arms of Ladislaus Posthumus; and in the center, the coat of arms of Maria Theresa. The installation in the base area by Leo Zogmeyer includes metal cubes with proclamations commemorating the persecution and extermination of Jewish citizens in Krems after 1938. Outside the Steiner Gate, the area was originally threatened by flooding from the Danube. The demolition of the city walls, which also served as flood protection, was only made possible by the regulation of the river in the 19th century and ultimately by the extensive construction of dams south of Krems' old town as part of the construction of the Wachau Railway at the beginning of the 20th century. A memorial stone affixed to the inner side of the Steinertor (Steiner Gate) commemorates a devastating flood in 1573 when an ice jam inundated the main road. Behind the Steinertor begins the Obere Landstraße (Upper Main Street), Krems' pedestrian zone, which, together with the Untere Landstraße (Lower Main Street), has formed the main axis of Krems' old town since the Middle Ages and leads to the Wiener Brücke (Vienna Bridge) in a length of approximately 700 meters. From Dürnstein-Oberloiben, a bus departs hourly for Krems/Melk. Dürnstein, a picturesque village in the Wachau region, is rich in history and charm. Founded in the 11th century by the Kuenring family, Dürnstein achieved considerable wealth and development in the 13th and 14th centuries through the ransom paid for the captured English King Richard the Lionheart.

Dürnstein History During the 11th century, the Kuenringers came to Austria from the Bavarian-Saxon region and received large areas around Eggenburg and Gobelsburg as imperial fiefs. In the service of the Austrian Babenberg sovereign, they acquired a large part of the Waldviertel. The Tegernsee monastery in Bavaria appointed them as bailiffs over the monastery's properties in the Wachau. Asso von Kuenring acquired the area around today's Dürnstein, and his grandson Hadmar I fortified the rock above the Danube for the first time. In 1192/93, the English King Richard I the Lionheart was imprisoned in the Kuenringer castle on behalf of the Babenberger Leopold V. A share of Richard's ransom, which went to the Kuenringers, enabled the castle and town of Dürnstein to be expanded and flourished in the 13th and 14th centuries. In the division of inheritance between the Kuenringer brothers Leuthold III and Johann I in 1347, the new town was referred to as a town for the first time. In this year, Dürnstein was probably granted town rights by Johann I, and the residents are referred to as citizens. The town of Dürnstein was not awarded its coat of arms until 1476 by Emperor Friedrich III. A worthwhile destination for a tour or a detour off the main route. A pretty, tranquil town with several sights. You can easily linger here for a while; there's plenty to discover. It's worth it! The historic old town – part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the neighboring town of Stein – boasts medieval alleys, baroque buildings, and landmarks such as the Steiner Tor (Stein Gate) and Gozzoburg Castle. Culturally, the Krems Art Mile shapes the cityscape with institutions such as the Kunsthalle (Art Gallery), the Caricature Museum, and the Lower Austrian State Gallery. Economically, Krems is closely linked to winemaking: Numerous wineries, especially known for Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, are located around the city. Thanks to its location on the Danube Cycle Path, Krems is also a popular destination for cyclists. A good network of cycle paths makes the city an ideal starting point for tours into the Wachau region and the surrounding Lower Austrian countryside.
