The lower Trauntal between Gmunden and Wels is designated as a bird sanctuary of European importance. The river itself, the alluvial forests along its banks and the adjoining cultural landscape are breeding areas and habitats for numerous species that have now become rare.

The Schacher ponds and their surroundings belonged to the European protected area "Untere Traun". They are of national importance as resting, transit and winter quarters, especially for ducks.
