From Dürnstein-Oberloiben, the bus leaves every hour for Krems or Melk. Dürnstein, a picturesque town in the Wachau, is rich in history and charm. Founded in the 11th century by the Kuenringers, Dürnstein achieved considerable prosperity and expansion in the 13th and 14th centuries thanks to the ransom for the captured English King Richard the Lionheart. Today, the town captivates with its impressive Dürnstein ruins, which tower high above the Danube, as well as its historic alleys and traditional wine taverns, which invite you to linger.

Chic building with an impressive and interesting history that dates back to 1774. Luberegg was last flooded during the severe Danube floods of 2002, so the walls had to dry out for years. In 2003, the hotel owner Josef Pichler from Emmersdorf acquired the property and built flood protection in 2005. Luberegg Castle has been used for gastronomy for years, and the western corner house houses a wine tavern. The property is now primarily used as an event hotel. Description on the website: Historically high-profile location. True!

Dürnstein History During the 11th century, the Kuenringers came to Austria from the Bavarian-Saxon region and received large areas around Eggenburg and Gobelsburg as imperial fiefs. In the service of the Austrian Babenberg sovereign, they acquired a large part of the Waldviertel. The Tegernsee monastery in Bavaria appointed them as bailiffs over the monastery's properties in the Wachau. Asso von Kuenring acquired the area around today's Dürnstein, and his grandson Hadmar I fortified the rock above the Danube for the first time. In 1192/93, the English King Richard I the Lionheart was imprisoned in the Kuenringer castle on behalf of the Babenberger Leopold V. A share of Richard's ransom, which went to the Kuenringers, enabled the castle and town of Dürnstein to be expanded and flourished in the 13th and 14th centuries. In the division of inheritance between the Kuenringer brothers Leuthold III and Johann I in 1347, the new town was referred to as a town for the first time. In this year, Dürnstein was probably granted town rights by Johann I, and the residents are referred to as citizens. The town of Dürnstein was not awarded its coat of arms until 1476 by Emperor Friedrich III. A very beautiful castle, right on the Danube. The castle can also be seen in the Sissi film, during a cruise on the Danube. Very close by, at the municipal building (forecourt), there's a water tap 💦 and for e-bikes: The sockets above are not switched off. You can charge your bike here.

Schönbühel Castle on the Danube is picturesquely situated on a 40-meter-high cliff on the right bank of the Danube in the Wachau region, not far from Melk in Lower Austria. It was built around the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries by Marchwardus de Schoenbuchele, likely on the remains of a Roman fortification. After frequently changing owners, the castle came into the possession of the influential Starhemberg family in 1396, who shaped it for over four centuries. In the 18th century, the medieval castle was replaced by a new building, and around 1821, Count Beroldingen had the present "New Castle" built. Since 1927, the complex has been owned by the Seilern-Aspang family, who restored it after severe damage during the Soviet occupation and continue to use it as their private residence. Therefore, an interior tour is not possible, but the castle can be admired from the outside. Particularly charming views open up from the opposite bank of the Danube, which is also easily accessible by bike via the Danube Cycle Path – one of the most beautiful cycle routes in Europe, which runs directly past the castle and offers wonderful photo perspectives of this striking landmark of the Wachau region.
