The Grotto of the Virgin Mary is located in a forest clearing below ground level, the entrance is fenced off or secured with a small concrete wall, the interior of the grotto is largely natural. At the entrance there is a small table and a place to sit, a small bell can be rung using a cord. On the right side of the grotto there is a painted statue of the Virgin Mary based on the model of Gothic Madonnas, above the entrance protected by a wooden gable roof, a carved, unpainted figure of the Virgin Mary in the style of the protective cloak Madonnas. Various pictures have been placed inside the grotto.

The Matterhörndl is a small but impressive rock in the Vienna Woods that is perfect for a short rest. It is a little hidden away from the main path and easy to miss, but it is worth the visit. With a small opening through and the opportunity to climb around a bit, it is a mystical place for photographers, children and nature lovers. I visited this mountain as part of my Dwarf Mountain Tours series. My goal is to climb every mountain in the Vienna Woods. The Seegrotte Hinterbrühl is a former gypsum mine near Vienna that has become a show mine and a popular attraction. The Seegrotte has an eventful history, ranging from mining to the Second World War to a film set. The main attraction is the largest underground lake in Europe, where you can take a romantic boat trip. The sea grotto is open all year round and is a unique experience whatever the weather.

An interesting rock in the middle of the forest. There are a few routes to try out for bouldering

January 12th, 2019 - Mariengrotte - Silence in the forest is the first thing you see, then it is a bit hidden, didn't even discover it - but then found it - space to reflect.

This is a flow and wide trail that connect the Kirschbaumplatz to the Kegelstattweg, that is my usual uphill line to the anninger hill. Overall a speedy flow trail, probably not very common, be careful at the end because the passage is blocked. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/8qaOWC3xbZ4

Good downhill trail - start between Anningerhaus and Wilhelmswarte - varied to drive, stones, roots, trees - a small trickle forms after rain - leads past the Dreidärrhöhle cave

12.01.2019 - A small beautiful and relaxing place. 15 minutes walk from the Hussar temple - a bit hidden on the left but reasonably good. It's worth looking. But not on the Anninger Mainstreet route, but off the direction of the Husarentempel. 😊👍👍👍

In 1195, the wasteland was first mentioned as part of a donation to the monastery of Heiligenkreuz. As with many well-known caves, some legends are entwined with the naming. The most famous of these states that Einhard, a monk from St. Gallen reported that a huge man has chosen the Einödhöhle as a dwelling place. This alleged bearer of the Einödtales and the cave is said to have been the giant warrior "Einöder", "Ainöther" or "Einher", who fought in the Awarenkrieg on the side of Charlemagne. In the process, the giant is said to have impaled so many enemies in a single battle as a whole army. His alleged shelter, however, was not in today's Einödhöhle, but in the "Great Einödhöhle", near the former Einödwirtshauses on the valley floor. After a ceiling collapse in the Great Einödhöhle this was blown up in 1888 due to imminent danger of collapse. To get the name "Einödhöhle", the "bat cave" higher up on the slope was given this name.
