We were the first time in Thalgau. Unfortunately we weren't lucky with the weather. Admittedly, we were on the road from April 8th to April 13th, 2023. Rain on the 1st day, and bitterly cold. The route over the Ischlerbahntrasse is wonderful to drive. Luckily for us we had booked a good hotel in Salzburg and were able to warm up again. And one more thing should be mentioned here. Very considerate drivers. That has to be said too. After a good meal, we hoped for a better Sunday. More on that in the next section.

Admittedly next to the main road but safely on the bike path, we practically cross both lakes. Obertrumer on the left, Mattsee on the right (driving north).

The Irrsee or Zeller See is a lake in Upper Austria, near the border with Salzburg. It is the warmest lake in the Salzkammergut and is under nature protection. The Irrsee is relatively natural and, with the surrounding moors, offers a habitat for many endangered animal and plant species.

Very nice route. From Salzburg you gain altitude steadily, but not too steeply. The path is paved and there are no cars. Perfect!

It is a route that leads through a fantastic landscape, unfortunately far too often on main roads. There are beautiful bike paths that Komoot does not suggest, what a shame!

Circular hike is not possible or dangerous. Fallen and felled trees block the hiking trail, and sections of the route are also closed. The trail has been deforested due to forest work, which means it cannot be found because it has grown over. The risk of getting lost is great. Too bad.

If you look to the left, you can see the chapel of Gebertsham, to the right is the Bay of Mattsee. A small canal connects the Mattsee with the Obertrumer See.
