“Is it always something special for you?” asks presenter Werner Schmidbauer as he and Munich priest Rainer Maria Schießler reach the summit cross crowning the mountain in an episode of the Bavarian Television series “Summit Meeting.” I would like to offer his short but poignant answer to all who pause before this small sacred monument for reflection: “For me, the cross has always been a symbol of encouragement, of hope, of new beginnings, of life. That’s how my parents taught it to me…”

The roast pork with dumplings and coleslaw was a delicious way to refuel after the hike through the snow. Unfortunately, I was too hungry to take a picture. But I managed to get one while enjoying the chocolate-covered marshmallow treat and mulled wine. 😀 Everything was homemade – hearty, good Austrian cuisine in a cozy mountain hut atmosphere – just as you'd want it.

Almost completed renovation with nice young host

The incredible view is the true reward for the climb. If the visibility is good, you can see the Zirbitzkogel (border with Carinthia). Ötscher, Hochkar, Großer Priel, Hochtor, Eisenerzer Reichenstein and many more show themselves from their best side.

The fox is already very familiar with the surroundings. A vixen that has its den in the pines. On the second day, she came as far as the benches. The new takeover in November 2023 is definitely an enrichment to the previous innkeepers. The young innkeepers still need a little practice, however. Nevertheless, it was a welcome rest, even though the place was still being cleaned and it wasn't officially open until the next day.
