"Where the mountains rise to the oft-changing skies, And the castle stands stately and gray; Where the still lake still lies, beneath that wild, rugged hill, In the vale of lovely Glenveagh..." By: Herbert W.K. Sterritt

We really enjoyed visiting Ross Castle in Killarney. This castle is particularly impressive from the outside and the surroundings with the beautiful lake are just totally romantic. I personally didn't find the interior that spectacular, but once you've had a look around the castle you'll be rewarded with a fantastic view at the top!

Dublin Castle was built in the early 13th century on the site of a Viking settlement and served for centuries as the seat of the English and later British administration of Ireland. In 1922, after Ireland's independence, Dublin Castle was handed over to the new Irish government. Today it is a major government complex and a major tourist attraction (Source: https://www.dublincastle.ie/)

One of Ireland's most famous and picturesque sights: a mountain with a fortified monastery ruin and another monastery ruin in the valley. A beautiful complex; solitude, however, is something else entirely.

Ashford Castle, a stunning medieval castle on the shores of Lough Corrib near the town of Cong in County Mayo, is one of Ireland's most magnificent and historic buildings. Originally built in the 13th century by a noble Anglo-Norman family, the castle has a long and fascinating history spanning several centuries. In the 19th century, Ashford Castle was purchased and both restored and expanded by Benjamin Guinness, a member of the famous brewing family. His son, Arthur Guinness, 1st Baron Ardilaun, was responsible for creating the extensive gardens and forests, which are now decorated with exotic plants from all over the world. Since 1939, the castle has served as one of Ireland's most exclusive 5-star hotels, attracting guests from all over the world, including numerous celebrities and royalty. Visiting Ashford Castle is not only a trip back in time, but also an opportunity to experience the luxurious amenities and exceptional service of one of the world's leading hotels. The magnificent gardens and picturesque lake provide ample opportunities for walking and exploring in some of Ireland's most beautiful scenery. Access to the grounds of Ashford Castle is normally reserved for hotel guests, but there are routes to allow viewing, such as the footbridge at Monk's Fishing House behind the abbey, which offers free entry. However, visitors should inform themselves in advance about the current access conditions and possible restrictions.

The house tower with its outer wall and corner towers, of which the remains of two are still there, was built in the 15th century. Many of these "tower houses" were built in Ireland during this period. The one at Ross Castle was restored as authentically as possible by the Irish state with great attention to detail and is therefore considered a special feature. Inside there is old furniture from other places, but it could have been there too. You can only visit the inside of the tower with a guided tour and photos are not allowed. I cannot understand the reasons for this, but the owner of the house decides. Taking part in a guided tour is highly recommended. Among other things, you learn why the spiral staircases run clockwise and what this has to do with the demonization of left-handed people, which lasted well into the 20th century. From the outside you can see the renovations in the 17th and especially the 18th century, when the castle was converted into a barracks. After the victory over Napoleon, this barracks also lost importance, as a French invasion was no longer the biggest concern. The property was returned to the owner family. They had naturally made their homes comfortable elsewhere in the meantime, and a medieval dwelling is anything but comfortable. In the 19th century, the castle was romanticized in keeping with the spirit of the times, without considering the history of the buildings. A British-Irish peculiarity is the roof tax. The owner had the roof removed for this reason. Otherwise he would have had to pay taxes for an unused second home. The renovations and the missing roof caused the tower in particular to fall into disrepair. Until people remembered the cultural heritage and restored it.

Lynch’s Castle, situated between Shop Street and Abbeygate Street, which now houses the AIB bank, could easily go unnoticed. Yet it is a striking example of a medieval fortified house. The castle is four storeys high with embellished carved windows, gargoyles and ornamental mouldings and cornices. Built by the powerful Lynch family as a protection from raids, parts of the limestone building may date back to the 14th century but the bulk of it was built in the 16th century. The Lynches, of Anglo-Norman descent, were one of the powerful 14 tribes who ruled Galway. The family was influential and feature prominently in Galway’s history. In 1493 James Lynch Fitzstephen, then mayor of Galway, hanged his own son for the murder of a Spanish sailor. The Lynch coat of arms can be seen on the front of the building as well as coats of arms for Henry VII and the Fitzgerald’s of Kildare. A large extension was added in 1808 and a carved doorway was added in 1933. Today, Lynch’s Castle is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Galway City, with its distinctive Gothic-style façade and ornate carvings. The building is a popular attraction for visitors to the city, who can explore its history and architecture and visit the ground floor during bank opening hours where information panels explain the history and architecture of the building in detail. https://www.galwaytourism.ie/lynchs-castle/

There was already a fortress on the site of the castle in the 10th century. It was conquered by the Normans in 1170 and expanded between 1204 and 1230. The Record Tower from 1226 has been preserved to this day. The currently existing buildings mainly date from the 18th and 19th centuries. In the Middle Ages and early modern times, Dublin Castle was also a prison with some prominent prisoners. Richard Creagh, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of Ireland, was held there from 1570 to 1575 († 1586 in the Tower of London). In 1907 the Irish Crown Jewels were stolen from Dublin Castle. Until 1922, the castle was the seat of the British administration of Ireland. The state apartments, built between 1680 and 1830, are still used today for official events. These include, among other things: the inauguration of the country's president as well as the meetings of the European Council, most recently in 2004. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dublin_Castle
