Montespluga SO The mountain village of Montespluga is located at an altitude of 1908 m above sea level at the beginning of the Val San Giacomo (also called Valle Spluga) about three kilometers from the top of the Splügen Pass. The village was built in a depression rich in water and pastures where the Valle Spluga meets the Val Loga, near the border peaks of the area such as the Pizzo Tambo. In 1927, with the construction of the dam wall located about 2 kilometers south of Montespluga, the Torrente Liro was dammed to form the Lago di Montespluga below the village. The village with the few houses, restaurants, hotels and shops on the pass road and the old customs building "La Casa" has hardly changed. Until 1841, the only hospice on the Splügen Pass and the only place of worship, the Chapel of San Francesco d'Assisi, were located here. The latter was consecrated in 1832 after the completion of the new road to the Splügen Pass in 1822. As early as 1767, the apostolic nuncio in Switzerland and later cardinal Luigi Valenti Gonzaga had given permission to set up a small chapel in the hospice. Since the opening of the San Bernardino Tunnel, the pass has no longer been kept open in winter. The village, which consists of three roads (Via Dogana, Via Ferrè and Via Val Loga), can be cut off from both Italy and Switzerland. Montespluga is the starting point for numerous hiking, mountaineering and ski touring destinations in the surrounding mountains and a stop on the cross-border long-distance hiking trail Via Spluga. Vals Deep in the Valsertal, a side valley of the Surselva south of Ilanz, lies the mountain village of Vals at 1250m. Around the village square there are still original Walser houses covered with stone slabs made of Vals quartzite. The quiet Graubünden holiday resort offers hiking fun, wellness in the thermal baths and winter sports opportunities on the Dachberg. The Valsertal owes its wilderness and diversity in a small space to the power of water. Over millions of years, ice and rain have shaped the deeply cut mountain valley. Vals' most important trump card is the 30 degree warm thermal spring, the only one in Graubünden that comes directly from the ground. The thermal bath, built by star architect Peter Zumthor from local quartzite, showcases the elements of water and stone and combines them to create a wellness experience. The building of timeless quality and simple elegance has also become a pilgrimage destination for those interested in architecture. An intact agricultural and alpine economy characterizes the valley and delights attentive mountain hikers: a few years ago, the Vals farmers decided to produce exclusively organically. The Cardinello gorge takes its name, which means "pin of the valley", from the nearby Monte Cardine. It is assumed that the first attempt to obtain a passage in the gorge took place in 1643. The construction of a passable road, however, was completed only after 1709, with the construction of tunnels, parapets and avalanche-protection canopies. The Cardinello had already cost the lives of several pack animals, soldiers and pilgrims, and continued to be the most dangerous stretch of the via Spluga. The transit of the French army in December 1800, led by General McDonald, therefore caused a stir. Despite the incessant storm 15,000 men managed to reach Splügen. The enterprise involved the loss of many soldiers, overwhelmed by avalanches and slipped into the abyss.

In the small town of Montespluga, where, despite being 1900 meters above sea level, we feel the first breath of Italy and the South, the only hospice and the only church (the chapel of San Francesco d'Assisi, replaced in 1825 from a new construction) of the locality were located until 1841 at Passo dello Spluga. Today Montespluga, thanks to its accommodation facilities and restaurants, is, both in summer and in winter, a small and welcoming tourist resort with an unmistakable atmosphere.

Sufnersee in Rheinwald The Sufnersee is located in the area of the municipalities of Sufers and Rheinwald. The lake can be reached via the San Bernardino route. The A13 runs along the lake. The only town on the lake is Sufers. The Sufers dam was completed in 1962. Around 30 hectares of meadowland were lost. To compensate for this loss, the existing humus was extracted from the reservoir during construction and distributed over poor soils. These soil improvements made it possible to increase agricultural production. There is no power plant on the lake, the water is channeled to the Bärenburg power station or via the Lago di Lei reservoir and the Ferrera balancing basin to the Ferrera power station. Splügen, Romansh Spleja/Spligia The towns in the Rheinwald, which were originally located in Romansh-speaking areas, were settled in the late 13th century by German-speaking Walsers from the south via the San Bernardino Pass. From the late Middle Ages to the 19th century, the transport of goods was the main source of income for the local population; most of them lived directly or indirectly from the muleteering trade. In 1716, the village of Splügen was largely destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt on the remaining foundations. A second fire in 1751 cost six families their possessions. From 1818 to 1823, the mule tracks over the Splügen and the San Bernardino Pass were almost simultaneously expanded into so-called commercial roads, which led to an upswing in the transit of goods and people. The reason was the rivalry between Piedmont and Austrian Lombardy, so that Lombardy expanded the Splügen Pass on its own account, while Piedmont only had to participate in the Graubünden project - a brief landmark was the bridge south of San Bernardino dedicated to King Vittorio Emanuele. The project for a rail link through Graubünden had been moved to the Lukmanier Pass and was subject to the Gotthard Railway. With the opening of the Gotthard Tunnel in 1882, many locals lost their job and earning opportunities; the transport of goods fell from 14,000 tons to 1,000 tons within a short time. Many emigrated and sought their fortune in the USA or New Zealand. At the time of the Second World War, there was an intention to submerge Splügen, Medels and Nufenen in a huge reservoir. The 700 meter long and 150 meter high dam would have been built near the Splügen castle ruins; a smaller dam near Sufers. Strong opposition from the population prevented the project. On November 29, 1946, the Rheinwald reservoir project was rejected by the Federal Council after years of legal disputes. During the Second World War, the Splügen barrier was built in the village and near the castle. A new chapter in the history of the pass village of Splügen began in 1967 with the opening of the road tunnel. Text / Source: Wikipedia https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spl%C3%BCgen_GR

Splügen is a typical pass village with a well-preserved villagescape, proud palaces and sun-tanned Walser houses. Despite tourism development, the village has largely managed to preserve its character. In 1995, Splügen was awarded the Wakker Prize by the Swiss Heritage Society for the careful preservation of the villagescape.

It is definitely worth taking the gravel path around the lake instead of the noisy road. This is even possible with a racing bike if you ride carefully.
