The history of the place is closely linked to the history of the castle and the counts of Solms-Braunfels. Runkel is located in the Lahn valley between the Westerwald and Taunus. Runkel was first mentioned in a document in 1259. Runkel Castle is outstanding. A knight of Charlemagne is said to have decided to build a castle in 787. The castle was built to secure the Lahn crossing and has been expanded several times.
