Today only an impressive ruin remains of the former Isenburg, which was built in the 12th century for Count Arnold von Altena on the Isenberg. In the middle of the ruins stands the Custodis House, which was built around 1855 in the classicist style.

The Blankenstein Castle, built in the 13th century, was once one of the main residences of the Count von der Mark. In 1922, the city of Bochum acquired the castle in Hattingen for one Reichsmark. It is of great importance for Bochum because it was granted city rights here in 1321 by Count Engelbert II. At that time, all that remained of the original building was the tower, which visitors have been able to climb again since 1971. The 30 meter high viewing platform offers an impressive view over the Ruhr Valley, the old village of Stiepel and Lake Kemnader. The Gethmann Gardens are also in the immediate vicinity. The idyllic location on the heights of the Ruhr Valley makes Blankenstein Castle and the associated gastronomy in the courtyard a popular destination.
