Many of these monuments, which you come across again and again on the way, are a testimony to the horror of war and tyranny - still significant and relevant today. As you cycle through the historic old town of Hückeswagen, the character of the route changes noticeably. Narrow streets, half-timbered houses, and the castle perched high above the town define the landscape. This section adds an urban flair to the tour and reveals a different side of the Bergisches Land region – compact, historic, and vibrant, seamlessly integrated into the route.

The monument with base and sculpture is located below the Volmarstein castle ruins. Base inscription front: Far from home, Volmarstein's brave sons died. The ruin offers the viewer a unique view of the city of Wetter, the Harkortsee, the Ruhr and the Ardeygebirge.

For two centuries, travelers have been hosted and accommodated here, a traditional business that has been passed on from generation to generation.

Only a few foundation walls and the foundations of the three towers, one of which still rises a few meters in height, remain today. The entire complex has a park-like character and is used for various events. A hiking trail leads around the castle hill through the forest and down to the Ruhr. The ruin offers the viewer a unique view of the Ruhr, the city of Wetter, Lake Harkort and the Ardey Mountains.

Because of the Hunger Force, the archbishop built the castle, which was widely known in its day as one of the most stately castles in the region, but had little luck as a fortification. After the famous Battle of Worringen in 1288, Count Eberhard I von der Mark conquered Volmarstein Castle and had the proud fortress partially destroyed. After it was rebuilt by the archbishop of Cologne, it was less than 50 years before another count of the Mark, this time Engelbert II of the Mark, besieged the castle again in 1324 and had it destroyed again. The Lords of the Mark rebuilt the castle between 1344 and 1360 and used it until the 16th century. The castle was only used as a palace-like residence, most recently probably by Duke Johann von Kleve-Mark around 1525. After that, Volmarstein Castle remained uninhabited and fell into disrepair in the years that followed. When a devastating fire destroyed the village in 1754, the citizens used the castle ruins as a quarry and thus finally sealed the fate of Volmarstein Castle.
