The Erlensee was originally a gravel pit. The gravel and sand extracted from the lake was mainly used for the construction of the motorways. After the end of gravel mining, the Erlensee was renatured. Today the lake is used for fish farming and as a leisure area. The Erlensee was named after the alders that grow on its shore.

The lake has an idyllic location. At the kiosk there is a generous selection of drinks and small dishes.

The Darmbach, which gave Darmstadt its name and feeds these five fish farming ponds, has its source very close by. All fish species that can be found in a lake live here and of course a few always hungry gray herons. Speaking of hungry: At the other end of the fish ponds is the "fisherman's hut". In the restaurant there you can let yourself be pampered by the friendly innkeepers.
