Beautiful buildings on a really beautiful plot

King Frederick William I, known as the "Soldier King", loved the town of Wusterhausen since his youth. Here he prepared for his reign, developed new ideas for a well-organized and economical state administration and began to build a respectable army, known as the "Tall Guys".

Königs Wusterhausen Castle in the town of the same name south-east of Berlin in the state of Brandenburg became known as the preferred residence of the "soldier king" Friedrich Wilhelm I and as the location of his tobacco colleges. The listed building has been a museum since 2000. The two-storey, almost square structure was built up to the upper floor using fieldstone. It shows the type of “solid house” that was obligatory for the Renaissance. The north and south sides of the building show the gable fronts with steep and parallel gabled roofs that are characteristic of the palace. On the northern courtyard facade is the upstream stair tower, shifted from the central axis, with a slate-covered tail cap. In the ballroom of the castle there are about 40 paintings that the soldier king painted himself between 1735 and 1739 in Kossenblatt Castle and that only came to Wusterhausen in 1863. Today's fountain was built on the site of the so-called Spindlerbrunnen, which once stood here and has a complex building history. With the completion of the Köpenick hospital in 1913, the Köpenick council decided to redesign an area to the west of about seven hectares into a public park. But it was only after the First World War, between 1926 and 1929, that the Köpenicker Volkspark was created under the direction of the Berlin gardening director Erwin Barth. The design typical of the time consisted mainly of a central meadow area, which was bordered by dense woodland on the northern and southern edges. In its overall orientation, the park referred axially to the entrance portal of the hospital complex to the east, to which it opened with a garden square. A representative fountain, the Spindlerbrunnen, was erected on the square in 1929 as the heart of the Volkspark. The fountain - a double bowl fountain made of red granite - was originally created in 1891 for the Spittelmarkt, but had to make way for the construction of the U-Bahn there in the 1920s. In the Volkspark, it now formed a central focal point for the main building of the hospital and, since Salvador-Allende-Straße did not yet exist, it was a popular area for the hospital facilities. In the 1970s and 1980s, the park underwent various redesign measures during the GDR era, during which the historic fountain was moved back to its old location in Berlin-Mitte in 1980. It was replaced by a simple sandstone bowl with a seat edge that was equipped with spring jets, which, however, had been "not in use for several years" as early as 1996. It looks a bit run down but has charm. Especially with the Schulzendorf village church in front of the castle. Today it is often used for filming.
