The settlement name Graven was mentioned for the first time in 1334. The castle complex itself first appeared in writing in 1341, when Knight Adolf von Graven was enfeoffed with it by Archbishop Walram von Jülich of Cologne.

The castle tower is the only remnant of the castle on Burgplatz, which was built in the 16th century and demolished after a fire in the 19th century. The oldest inland navigation museum in Germany has been housed here since 1984. The building, known as the Shipping Museum, shows exhibits on the history of shipbuilding, trade and travel on the river and the ecology of the Rhine. The story is brought to life in pictures, films and archives.
