A predecessor building, "Schwanstein", was first mentioned in documents in 1397. Over the centuries, the castle was badly damaged. In 1832, Crown Prince Maximilian acquired the castle and had it converted into the palace we see today. After his death, his son, King Ludwig II, took over the property and had it decorated according to his preferences.

Füssen is at the end of the Via Claudia Augusta cycle path and the Romantic Road. Füssen rightly enjoys an excellent reputation, as it lies at the foot of the Alps and on a beautiful lake (Forggensee). The old town of Füssen also offers a number of sights and the proximity to the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles have made Füssen famous beyond the borders.

Of course, we also passed Füssen on our Forggensee tour. A round that I can only recommend to everyone.

Great section on the Via Claudia Augusta. The whole area around Hohenschwangau Castle and Neuschwanstein Castle was worth a longer break for us.
