For me one of the most beautiful or the most beautiful place on the Rennsteig

Once you have climbed the Pleß you will be rewarded with a great view. There is a playground for the little ones and plenty of seating for the adults to relax. The hiking hut is open on weekends and public holidays in the afternoons. 👍🏻

Great viewpoint and nice place to take a break.

The castle was probably built in the High Middle Ages by the Lords of Frankenstein, who resided near Bad Salzungen, as an outpost. After it passed to the Wettin dynasty, the Lords vom Stein zu Altenstein received the castle as a fief and rebuilt it. Hermann vom Stein oversaw its expansion in the Renaissance style around 1599. Around 1800, under the influence of Romanticism, efforts began to restore the now ruined complex. The Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen appreciated its appearance within sight of the landscaped park surrounding their summer residence, Altenstein Castle. Between Meilerstätte and Glöcknerhütte is the junction (well signposted) to the Glöckner. After about 100m you reach the imposing granite rock formation of the Glöckner. This can be hiked as a circular route on a narrow path with a great view. Rest areas are available above and below the rock formation.

One of the many eye-catchers in the Altenstein Landscape Park. It is also fun for children to climb these rock steps to the house and enjoy the wonderful view from there.
