The previous building on this site had already been built as a small chapel in 968 on the occasion of the founding of the diocese of Meissen by Emperor Otto I. Between 1006 and 1073 it was converted into a four-towered Romanesque basilica, which was elevated to the status of an episcopal cathedral.

Meissen Cathedral The cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and St. Donatus on the castle hill in Meißen was the formative center of the diocese and the March of Meißen or the later Electorate of Saxony from its elevation to a cathedral church under Emperor Otto in 968 until the Reformation. Choir and The transept of the Gothic cathedral, built together from 1240 to around 1270, represents the most modern architectural styles of the time. After a change of plan around 1270, the nave was built in the form of a hall. The Meissen Cathedral with its nave and the lowest floors of the west towers was completed around 1400. The final consecration of the cathedral was in 1401. At this time, the southern of the two choir flank towers had already been completed. In 1420 a west choir was added as a burial place for the Wettins and a place of dynastic commemoration. The third floor of the west tower followed in the 1470s; The expansion of the west towers from 1904 to 1908 was based on plans by the Karlsruhe architect Carl Schäfer. In association with the three other Saxon cathedrals in Freiberg, Bautzen and Wurzen, the Meißner Cathedral is the central building on which over a millennium of our state and church history can be traced.
