St. Martin's Church in the small southwest German town of Pfullingen in the Reutlingen district of Baden-Württemberg is the oldest church building in the town. It is located in the town center on the market square. It is considered the "original church" of the medieval Pfullichgau region. According to archaeological research, its origins date back to the Christianization of the Alemanni in the 7th century. This makes St. Martin's Church, including its predecessor buildings located on the same site, one of the most historically ancient Christian sacred buildings in Württemberg. Protestant since the Reformation in the 16th century, St. Martin's Church is named after Martin of Tours, who is venerated as a saint across all Christian denominations. Organizationally, the current St. Martin's Church congregation, as a member of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg, belongs to the Protestant Church in Germany (EKD). As a cultural monument, St. Martin's Church in Pfullingen is protected under the provisions of the Baden-Württemberg Monument Protection Act. During a major renovation of St. Martin's Church in 1962, older building fragments were discovered, indicating that at least one other church building had stood on its site before its completion, which had previously been dated 1463. As a result, archaeological excavations were initiated, which lasted more than a year until 1963 and unearthed a total of four predecessors of St. Martin's Church: a wooden church from the 7th century, two hall churches with apses, and a three-aisled basilica. The present St. Martin's Church originated from that basilica around the 13th century, which was first expanded with a tower before the choir and then the nave were replaced.
