The water buffalo near Wustrow and Ahrenshoop are used for landscape management, particularly on the renaturalized Fischland meadows and in the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park. They inhabit the shallow shore areas of the Darß peninsula and the Zingst Channel, where they naturally maintain the reeds and grasses, as conventional methods and sheep have reached their limits here.
