It's especially interesting when a large ship is being built there. The Disney Destiny had just been undocked on our tour, so we could admire it in the shipyard's harbor basin.

In the Ems floodplain nature reserve between Rhede and Papenburg (Ems floodplains north and south), you can constantly observe the river's natural course. Discover the pristine landscape of the oxbow lakes and an unusually diverse birdlife. Binoculars are recommended. The trails here are easy to cycle.

Cruise ships disembark from the Ems River through this lock. This lock is used backwards. The so-called sea lock primarily serves the marina and provides access to Papenburg.

Beautiful cycle path along the Ems dyke between Papenburg and Rhede. Asphalt is top-notch. There are occasionally a few bumps.

GOOD BY TRADITION For around 225 years, the Meyer family has kept the shipbuilding company on track – now in its seventh generation. As in its founding days, the shipyard is still located in Papenburg today. It was here that shipyard founder Willm Rolf Meyer began building small wooden sailing ships in 1795. In the decades and centuries that followed, MEYER WERFT repeatedly demonstrated its pioneering spirit. We expanded our production and shipyard halls, and in 2018, we delivered the world's first cruise ship equipped with low-emission liquefied natural gas propulsion. Today, MEYER WERFT is considered a technological leader in cruise ship construction. We know that we owe this success primarily to our employees and the partner companies that work for us. That's why we continue to ensure a spirit of partnership – and assume responsibility for the people, the region, and the environment.

From its founding until the 1980s, the Meyer shipyard was located in the center of Papenburg. Mainly due to a lack of space due to the constantly growing number of new buildings, the shipyard was forced to relocate to its current location in the outer harbor directly on the Ems. The cultural center Forum Alte Werft is now located on the former site. In the last decades of the 20th century, the shipyard's construction program included ferries, RoRo ships, container ships and animal transporters. In ferry construction, the long-standing cooperation with the state-owned Indonesian ferry company Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (PELNI) is particularly important. Between 1983 and 2008, Meyer delivered a total of 24 passenger ferries of the types 1000, 2000 and 3000 with a passenger capacity of between 1,000 and 3,000 people to PELNI, which are used in domestic Indonesian traffic. 3 other, smaller ferries (Type 500)
