The large Datteln lock was built in 1928 and opened together with the canal in 1931. The lock chamber is 222 m long, 12 m wide, the head is 7.5 m and the water consumption is 20,000 m³ per lock. Ships with a draught of up to 2.8 m can be locked through. This lock is closed on the upstream and downstream sides by lifting gates. These lock gates were replaced in November 1993. The small Datteln lock directly next to it is 112 m long and 12 m wide. The lock was built in 1964. It has a lifting gate on the upstream side and a sliding gate on the downstream side. The suspended sliding gate is a safety measure against possible subsidence, as its function is not affected by inclines in the terrain. A double lock, i.e. an uphill and downhill journey together, takes about 40 minutes. On average, 90 ships pass through the two locks every day.
