The fountain sculpture on Postplatz in Schwerte was created by Prof. Albert Hien in 2000 and consists of two geometric stainless steel bodies. One stands vertically with its tip in the ground, the other lies diagonally next to it as a double cone. They are connected by a pipe that originally flowed with a water jet – this caused a drum to rotate in the horizontal cone and led the water back into a drain. The tall cone, at about six meters, is imposing – the perforated upper half, on the other hand, appears light and transparent, allowing rainwater to penetrate unhindered. The second form features two connected truncated cones, with the overflowing water flowing into the lower, closed section and then disappearing through the outlet pipe. Albert Hien, born in Munich in 1956, is known for his expressive stainless steel sculptures, often with reference to the elements, in this case specifically to water. The choice of material reflects his exploration of industrial building materials as an aesthetically functional medium. In its construction, the sculpture is a sophisticated combination of art and technology: water, movement, and sound merge. Until a few years ago, the clatter of water from the coins in the drum earned it the nickname "Money Launderer"—an acoustic feature that no longer functions, but recalls this interactive, almost mechanical function.

The memorial at Postplatz in Schwerte is an important war memorial dating from 1870/71 and is one of the oldest memorials in the city. Originally erected with donations from the families of fallen soldiers and citizens, it has stood here for over 150 years and is a listed monument. The memorial consists of a steep sandstone column, the base of which bears a marble plaque inscribed with the names of several fallen soldiers – dedicated to the "valiant dead" of the Prussian campaigns. A distinctive figure is the standing eagle on the top of the column, facing west. During the most recent restoration (2021), experts surprisingly discovered that the eagle is not made of bronze, as previously assumed, but of an early hollow plastic material. The architecture of the memorial combines classical design with symbolic strength: the ascending column appears solemnly elevated, and the eagle conveys presence and vigilance. The materials used—sandstone, marble, and the surprising plastic eye—reflect a balance between significance and economic awareness at the time. As part of the restoration in spring 2021, the base and column were thoroughly cleaned, repaired, and sandblasted—although residents complained about incomplete inscriptions. Nevertheless, the structure was preserved and the monument significantly enhanced for decades to come.

Unfortunately, the bronze sculptures are no longer in the park

A great descent and a lot of fun – but be careful: it's steep in places and the surface is poor in places. Good line selection is worth its weight in gold here!
