The river rises in the Lusatian Uplands (Upper Lusatia) at an elevation of 317 m above sea level on the eastern flank of the 396-meter-high Kuppe, a subsidiary peak of the Hochstein. The source is located approximately 1.5 kilometers south of the village of Kindisch, part of Elstra. From there, the Black Elster initially flows north through Elstra, Kamenz, Milstrich, and Wittichenau. From Hoyerswerda, it flows westward to Elsterheide. Further on, after 63 kilometers, it crosses the Saxon-Brandenburg border. Immediately after the border, the Black Elster crosses the Koschen Canal at a waterway intersection between Großkoschen and Kleinkoschen. It then flows through Senftenberg and Ruhland to Lauchhammer. There, it reaches the approximately 15,000-hectare Schraden forest, the estuary of the Pulsnitz. After passing the narrowest point of the Breslau-Magdeburg glacial valley near Elsterwerda (7 kilometers), the Schwarze Elster turns northwest and flows through the Elbe-Elster lowlands, including the towns of Bad Liebenwerda, Herzberg, and Jessen. It flows into the Elbe at river kilometer 198.5 at an elevation of 69 meters above sea level near the municipality of Elster (Elbe). Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwarze_Elster

The Black Elster (Lower Sorbian: Carny Halšter, obsolete: Carna Bytśica;[4] Upper Sorbian: Čorny Halštrow)[5] is a 179-kilometer[6] long, right tributary of the Elbe in the German federal states of Saxony, Brandenburg, and Saxony-Anhalt. The originally strongly meandering course of the river, which rises in the West Lusatian Uplands and flows into Elster (Elbe), was significantly altered from the mid-19th century onwards by regulation and straightening measures, and numerous tributaries were cut off. Among other things, severe environmental pollution caused by the local industry, which persisted until the 1980s, led to the near-extinction of the Black Elster's once rich fish population. A really impressive castle, with the white facades well maintained and obviously in use, and the yellow house inside looking a bit run down. Hopefully something will happen there. Annaburg is worth a visit. Like everything in the area, it's a relatively isolated area, but it's interesting to see what has already been refurbished and what hasn't. A slightly larger town in the area with supermarkets and other retail outlets.

An amazing place in the middle of nowhere is Annaburg. And the restored Renaissance castle is even more amazing. You can go inside - there is a museum about the castle's history inside.
