The Black Elster (Lower Sorbian: Carny Halšter, obsolete: Carna Bytśica;[4] Upper Sorbian: Čorny Halštrow)[5] is a 179-kilometer[6] long, right tributary of the Elbe in the German federal states of Saxony, Brandenburg, and Saxony-Anhalt.
The originally strongly meandering course of the river, which rises in the West Lusatian Uplands and flows into Elster (Elbe), was significantly altered from the mid-19th century onwards by regulation and straightening measures, and numerous tributaries were cut off.
Among other things, severe environmental pollution caused by the local industry, which persisted until the 1980s, led to the near-extinction of the Black Elster's once rich fish population.
