Amazing scenery of the lake and fells, good place for photos

Honister Pass links the Buttermere Valley to the eastern end of Borrowdale. At 356 metres (1,167 feet), it’s one of the highest passes in Cumbria, featuring a steep 1-in-4 (25%) gradient.

The lake is fed by numerous streams including the beck from Scale Force. The River Cocker starts from here, flowing towards Cockermouth where it joins the River Derwent.

National Cycle Network route 71 crosses from the Buttermere Valley into Lorton Vale. It's known as the C2C route and has stunning views over Crummock Water.

Beware of free descending in the wet - it *appears* a shallow descent but you pick up speed quickly and there are some (otherwise lovely) sharp/blind turns.

Easy hike.spectacular views of Cromock water

Running south from Keswick, Borrowdale Road traces the eastern edge of the beautiful Derwent Water. It's a lovely scenic stretch, with views of the lake and mountains, giving it an almost Swiss-like feel. The road can get busy at certain times, but generally it's fairly quiet to cycle along.

This spot offers fabulous views over Crummock Water. Stretching over 2.5 miles (4 km), this crystal-clear lake features a rocky bottom and is bordered by the steep fellsides adorned with Skiddaw slate.

Must try the ice cream made at the farm

Beware the chicane at the bridge on the descent to Gatesgarth (on the Buttermere road), the stone parapets are lethal if you're out of control here; moreso in the wet

Stunning view if you can park in small layby just before/after bridge.

Ambio café is pretty nice but same unspeedy service. Worth the wait though

Skye Farm Tea Room is a popular place in a great location. They serve a nice selection of home cooked food as well as drinks, cake and snacks. Do try the homemade ice cream that's made with the prize-winning milk of their own Ayrshire cows. Skye farm also run the wonderful, basic campsite in Buttermere if you want to base yourself here and explore the wealth of running available.

Fantastic loop around the national park. Works well as a three day tour by starting in Penrith and overnighting in Eskdale and Kirkby Lonsdale.

Well stocked cafe for cyclists.

Can be a bit of a rat run at certain times of the day as Sellafield workers finish their shifts and try and avoid the horrors of the A595.

The Kirkstile Inn makes a pleasant stop on this easy route. The food is good and so is the beer!
