Quite a few gates to open on this stretch

Starting the Honister Pass climb from Seatoller, the B5289 initially rises steadily from the beautiful Borrowdale valley. Find a sustainable rhythm early, but know the real test lies ahead. The gradient ramps up severely in the latter stages, especially after crossing the stream bridge. Experience the full force of the climb on the final brutal ramps leading towards the Honister Slate Mine at the summit, where the gradient reaches a formidable 25%. Feel the stunning, rugged Lake District scenery unfold around you as you push hard on the narrow, winding road. Be aware of other traffic sharing this challenging ascent. The reward is immense satisfaction as you crest the summit by the mine, with breathtaking views back down Borrowdale.

The lake is fed by numerous streams including the beck from Scale Force. The River Cocker starts from here, flowing towards Cockermouth where it joins the River Derwent.

Lovely quiet roads, so much more peaceful than the south lakes!

Can get busy at weekends!

Beware of free descending in the wet - it *appears* a shallow descent but you pick up speed quickly and there are some (otherwise lovely) sharp/blind turns.

2018 Nominee in The Woodlands Trust Tree of the Year competition. It should be obvious how the Drunkard Rowan, also known as the Windswept Woman of Caldbeck Common, got its name. The tree’s trunk is bent at an incredible 90° angle, amazingly without having snapped. The common it grows on is boggy and exposed, tough conditions for any tree. Over the course of its life, the rowan has gradually sunk and bent as it has grown, thanks to the high winds it suffers and the soft clay deposit on which it sits. Unsurprisingly given the conditions, it has very few neighbours, making it stand out even more against the harsh landscape.

The road linking the summit of Honister and Seatoller is a fantastic section of the Honister Pass which cuts through the beautiful Borrowdale Valley. It's called the 'Borrowdale side' and is much stepper and more enclosed than the 'Butttermere side', on the other side of the pass after the slate mine, which is wide open and a more gradual climb/descent.

This spot offers fabulous views over Crummock Water. Stretching over 2.5 miles (4 km), this crystal-clear lake features a rocky bottom and is bordered by the steep fellsides adorned with Skiddaw slate.

Greystoke is a lovely Cumbrian village boasting charming 17th-century cottages, a picturesque village green, and an ancient market cross with roots dating back to the early 1600s.
