My first long hike. The views are amazing. Bare in mind if the route says fitness level expert it really is required. I have ignored that and the route took nearly 2 hours longer than it should. Also pulled a muscle on my hip on one of the climbs so the descent and the rest of the route was in pure pain but made it to the end. 11/10 will go again.

Eskdale Mill is a historic watermill dating back to the 16th century, making it one of the oldest working watermills in the Lake District. The mill has now been restored and is a popular visitor attraction showcasing the traditional milling techniques and workings of a watermill.

Lush views over Devoke Water!

To the west of the cute packhorse bridge over the River Esk is an excellent wild swimming spot. It is not recommended to jump from the rocks or the bridge as the water levels can change. Ease yourself in more gently for a refreshing dip.

The Woolpack Inn is a trendy pub between the Hardknott Pass and Boot in the Eskdale valley. They have rooms and serve great food, drinks and snacks including wood fired pizza. Food served every day. Breakfast 8:00 - 11:00 Lunch 12:00 - 15:00 Supper 17:00 - 20:30 (17:00 - 20:00 on Sundays) Pizza generally about 13:00 - 21:00 but not always all afternoon. You can normally use the car park for your run if you go in and buy a coffee or promise to have a meal on your return, do ask though.

Eel Tarn is a pretty freshwater lake on the fell above Eskdale. Normally run past on the way to the Scafells from Eskdale, but also a great loop from Boot.

Illgill Head at 609m is the highest point of the long ridge above Wast Water, it's often known as Wastwater screes. The summit and ridge line are runnable, nowhere near as rough as the face looks so the ridge makes a good loop with the lake or from further away. Illgill head is a fine viewpoint of Wasdale Head.

Fantastic spot for a picnic and a swim in the river Esk.

Brat's Hill is the largest stone circle of three located on this fell - the other two being White Moss and Low Longrigg located 100m and 500m away respectively. Brat's Hill stone circle has approximately 42 stones forming an irregular circle containing five funerary cairns.

epic swimspot. I wouldn't recommend jumping off the bridge, it's not quite deep enough. I have seen it done but don't try it yourself!
