Lake Ammersee has an area of approximately 47 km² and a maximum depth of about 80 meters. It is the third-largest Alpine lake in Bavaria. The lake is owned by the Free State of Bavaria as an unincorporated area of the same name. Source: Wikipedia

Around 1629, Dießen fishermen erected a white tuff column on the shore of Lake Ammersee. It marked the arrival and departure point for Andechs pilgrims and other ferry passengers. Until 1819, there was no house anywhere near this spot. Anyone who couldn't find space in the boat was called out: "Wait a while, then I'll come back!" Thus, the original place name, "Zur weißen Säule," was replaced by "Wartaweil." Source: Information board at the site
