Anyone who comes to Kobern-Gondorf for the first time is fascinated by the large number of historical buildings. Visitors will find no fewer than two castles and palaces in the quiet village on the Moselle. These are the ruins of the Niederburg castle, the Oberburg that rises picturesquely on a mountain ridge high above the Moselle with the important late Romanesque Matthias Chapel, the fairytale and charming Liebieg castle and the von der Leyen castle, the former Gondorfer Oberburg. Although the moat has been drained, Liebieg castle is the only moated castle on the Moselle. The rich history from the time of the Celts and Romans speaks for itself. The towns of Kobern and Gondorf are located on the Moselle, the Dreckenach district is located a little further from the river on the Maifeld, a higher area on the Nothbach.
