Potsdam's Old Market Square, the heart of the city since time immemorial, combines history and modernity. After the destruction of World War II and the GDR era, the square now shines in its historic splendor.

Potsdam is the capital of the German state of Brandenburg. The city is known for its magnificent palaces and gardens, including the famous Sanssouci Palace, once the summer residence of Frederick the Great. Potsdam also has a rich history and was an important location during the Cold War, notable among these being the Glienicke Bridge prisoner exchanges! The city also offers a wide range of cultural events.

Every quarter of an hour, Hanns Eisler's song "In Spring" is sung with a bright chime. A full verse is played on the hour. The clock was a popular meeting place, especially for political groups. In 1983, young people met here to "Pray Silence for the Environment." From the mid-1980s onward, people seeking to leave the country also met in silence at the music box. On October 7, 1989, the civil rights demonstration began in silence at Höfer's music box.

The electrically operated clock rests on four pillars and is made of steel, copper, brass, and gold leaf. Beneath a rose arbor is a carillon, with individual bells made of fine porcelain. The clock is crowned by etched metal depictions of Potsdam's cityscapes and buildings, such as the Nauen Gate and the Einstein Tower. Within the four pillars is a shiny gold sphere that displays the time. Beneath the sphere are metal plates bearing symbols that refer to branches of science and trades, such as astronomy and the Havel River fishery.

The music box was designed by Gottfried Höfer (1931–1983) in 1977 and built in the Meissen tower clock workshop. The approximately 3.40-meter-tall metal music box was installed in 1979. It marked the end of Klement-Gottwald-Straße, which had been redesigned at the time and is now once again known as Brandenburger Straße.
