Shortly after his accession to the throne, Frederick William III commissioned the architect David Gilly to rebuild Paretz as a model Prussian village. The new village consisted of approximately ten farms, each largely of a uniform design. In addition to a number of buildings with specific functions, he also had two small gatehouses built to the right and left of the access road, marking the eastern entrance to the village. The Protestant St. Mary's Church, a single-nave, cruciform, vaulted brick building, was built in the 15th century in the late Gothic style as a pilgrimage church. The two towers were raised in the Baroque style and given onion domes in 1724. The west gable of the church features an outdoor pulpit, from which blessings were given to passing pilgrims and worshippers.

Two small gatehouses to the right and left of the road marked the eastern entrance to the village; one formerly contained mainly a sheepfold, the other the shepherd's dwelling.
