A beautiful, natural lake

The Schmöckwitz Werder was first mentioned in a document in 1516. At that time, Elector Joachim I sold the Köpenick office to Georg Flans. The document states: "He may also hunt on the Schmeckwitz Werder; but if we or our heirs want to hunt there, he should stand still on the same Werder." In 1752, the spinning village of Gosen was founded on the northern tip of the Schmöckwitz Werder. Since 1891, the Oder-Spree Canal has divided the Werder into a larger southern half and a smaller northern half.

The Old Wernsdorf Lake does not seem to officially exist. However, this name can be found on several maps for the part of the Wernsdorf Lake that lies south of the Oder-Spree Canal.
