An incredibly solid masonry of precisely hewn fieldstones characterizes this fairly well-preserved ruin. Considering that it has remained in this condition since 1440, this is also quite astonishing. The original church was built in the mid-13th century and fell victim to a major war. Lychen was conquered in the Pomeranian-Brandenburg War (1329-1333).

The Retzow church ruins, once a Gothic fieldstone church from the 13th century, now stand as an impressive historical monument in the cemetery of Retzow, a district of Lychen in the Uckermark district. This ruin, destroyed during the war between Mecklenburg and its allies Brandenburg and Pomerania around 1440, tells a story of conflict and loss, but also of the region's resilience and cultural heritage. The rectangular fieldstone building without a tower has a sloping base, several portals and a sacristy attached to the north side. Although many of the original door frames were removed, the window frames, particularly those of the ogival east windows, have largely been preserved. The ruin offers a unique insight into medieval architecture and its construction methods. A visit to the Retzow church ruins is not only a trip into the past, but also an opportunity to enjoy the peace and beauty of the surrounding landscape. The cemetery where the ruins stand and the nearby belfry, which was moved to the cemetery in 1966, contribute to the atmospheric mood of the place. Visitors should note that the ruins are located in a cemetery and therefore respect and consideration are required. The church ruins are freely accessible and visitors can take in the silence and historical atmosphere of the place. It's worth taking some time to look at the details of the ruin and absorb the stories it tells.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Lychen "Beautification Association" created the hiking trail on Wurlsee. At the same time, the mill owner Paul Scherz had the spring flowing into the Wurlsee surrounded. He gave it the name “Ilsenquelle”. At that time the spring was a popular place where young girls went to get Easter water. After washing with the spring water on Easter morning, they hoped to find the right person for a covenant of life the following year.
