Zörbig was first mentioned as a town in 1259. Nevertheless, more than two centuries passed before it received municipal privileges in 1470. During this time (15th century), the town was also surrounded by double moats, a wall and ramparts near the Wettin castle.[1] Of the three town gates, only the Halle Gate Tower remains. The others were removed from 1853 onwards.[2] The square quarry stone tower is relatively narrow and high and is crowned by a curved hood with a lantern. These surround four Renaissance gables from 1556. The tower was restored in 1993.[3] The gatehouse was demolished in 1894 in order to widen the street. The tower, which characterises the townscape, has a clock tower on the east and west sides.[4] The windows are all rather small, which underlines the defensive character. The gate tower is located in the west of the old town of Zörbig on Lange Straße, which separates the city park from the Rudolf-Breitscheid-Park directly in front of the gate. The city gate was named after the city of Halle (Saale). It also gave its name to the street Vor dem Halleschen Tore, which branches off from the tower.
