The lake is 28 km long and has a water volume of 215 million m³. The dam was built between 1926 and 1932 for flood protection and to generate energy. It is 205 meters long, 65 meters high and 47 meters wide at the base. It is located in the northernmost part between the Bleiberg mountains. The reservoir got its name from these mountains.

It is not for nothing that the Saale Cycle Route tour from the source to Saalfeld is one of the most difficult of the entire route. And it is understandable that the term "cycling" is often used. Because here you do have to push the bike (except for e-bikers). But it is a satisfying feeling to have completed this trail using muscle power.
