The Mills Gap Overlook is a short detour off of the Appalachian Trail, but it is definitely worth getting off the trail and stopping to enjoy the view. The viewpoint is also right where the Blue Ridge Parkway intersects with the trail, so there is a good chance you will see others enjoying this spot.

Poplar Forest was designed by Thomas Jefferson, Founding Father and third U.S. president, at the beginning of the 19th century. He used the plantation and house as a private retreat and business. Since 1986, the house and its grounds have welcomed visitors. It's a great place to learn about history. General admission costs $18.

Prepare yourself for STEEP uphill hiking for about 2 miles. There are two different viewing points once you've reached the top of this mountain. You should absolutely view both points. Wear very good hiking shoes with ankle support and a good grip. It would be a plus if they had a sturdy sole too. As said in the tip before, The views of the rolling landscapes below you are worth the whole effort. This is a strenuous hike though some people would consider this moderate. 😳

At Milepost 91.8 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mills Gap Overlook views out over the James River Valley. The Appalachian Trail crosses through the parking lot, so you can expect for this to be one of the busier pull-offs in this area.

It peers over the Arnold Valley and offers views to the south of Thunder Ridge, which the Appalachian Trail traverses on its way towards the state of North Carolina.

The Blue Ridge Parkway crosses over the James River here via a bridge. There are some trails and parking areas here near the river, making this a great starting/stopping point or a resupply location.

At 3,145 feet, Onion Mountain Overlook towers over the foothill peaks it views over. It's located at Milepost 79.7 on the Blue Ridge Parkway and attracts a lot of visitors every day due to its easy access and picnic areas (and ample parking).
