This is a lovely spot on the George S. Mickelson Trail to see grazing cows and other local wildlife. This stretch through Black Hills National Forest is quiet and open, worth a short stop.

This crossroads is located just before the ascent and entry into the Black Hills National Forest. You are between two ecosystems: the great plains and the beginning of the mid-mountains.

This military cemetery was created in 1876 after the defeat of General Custer's 7th Cavalry Regiment. It houses some of the dead from the Battle of Little Big Horn which took place in Montana. This famous site is called the Battle of Greasy Grass by the Arapahoes, Cheyennes and Lakotas. They were victorious on June 25 and 26, 1876. The cemetery also houses American dead from the First and Second World Wars. From the cemetery, there are some nice views of Bear Butte and the plains as well as the Black Hills.

At 785 acres Pactola Lake is the largest and deepest reservoir in the Black Hills National Forest. It is a popular outdoor destination with facilities including a campground, swim beach, picnic area, boat launches and day use trails.

The Old Baldy Trail leads up to the Old Baldy Summit Trail. The Old Baldy Trail is considered a moderate path and winds through some beautiful woodlands. If you want to take the Old Baldy Summit Trail to continue to the top, make sure you are prepared, as it is a very intense summit with a narrow path, so it should only be attempted if you have sufficient experience.
