The church was built in the 12th century or earlier before falling into disrepair, being abandoned and finally demolished. It is said to have been deserted as early as 1645. Today, only the foundation stones remain to a height of about one meter. There are also two runestones here

The Mariefred Cemetery contains the grave of Kurt Tucholsky, who emigrated from Germany to Sweden in 1929. This was preceded by a five-month stay near Mariefred in the summer of 1929, where he found the material for his "summer story" Gripsholm Castle, published in 1931. Stallarholmen is a nice mix of experiences: you can go shopping in Gula Industrihuset, visit Mälsåker Castle or its three medieval churches, enjoy the view at Åsa grave field, cycle along the trails, moor in the guest harbour and eat at the restaurant or visit its many popular events.
