From several points around Vaxholm, you get a stunning view of Vaxholm Fortress, a historic 16th-century fort built to protect Stockholm from naval attacks. Today, it houses a museum showcasing the area’s military history, and the fortress itself stands proudly amid the sparkling waters of the archipelago.

This is a fantastic fun piece of gravel. Note the grazing animals - the sign says they're water buffalo and are here for biodiversity!

Final 1.5km of road from Väsby does not have a bike path, you need to ride on the small hard shoulder. Speed limit is 70 km/h. Good long stretches so traffic can see you. Be aware when riding slower bikes.

My first bike touring test run preparing for my Stockholm - Trondheim tour 22-28 of July. Big difference to bike with bags and all the equipment😇 At least I did get a feel of what I have before me. I realized that cycling shoes can make this easier so I went to xxl to buy a pair that I can use both on the spinning at the gym and also on my bike. This route is overall a great tour, easy to find, some nice places where you could take a break and for me it was a night in the tent at Bogesund and get som rest before the last 40 kilometers the day after.

Vaxholm describes itself as the capital of the Stockholm archipelago. It is a cozy small town with shops, galleries, cafes and a very lively hustle and bustle around the many sailing and motor boats.

Bogesund Castle Bogesund Castle was built between 1642 and 1650 by Count Per Brahe the Younger. He was Sweden's largest landowner at the time and is said to have considered Bogesund Castle his primary castle and home. At that time, the castle was square, with four floors and two attics under a gable roof. It had many beautiful ceiling and wall paintings, some of which still survive today. In the 1770s, the castle was modernized, and traces of the wallpaper, tiled stoves, and woodwork from this renovation can still be seen. In the 19th century, a new staircase and entrance door were added, but the greatest change occurred between 1863 and 1867, when the then owner, Nils Albrekt von Lantingshausen Höpken, had the building rebuilt into the romantic castle it is today. He also added a chapel, a dining room, and an elegant winter garden. The park was also redesigned in the same romantic style. Von Höpken was the last lord of Bogesund Castle. He abandoned it in the 1910s, and it fell into disrepair. After many years of neglect, the government took over the castle thanks to a specially introduced law called the Lex Bogesund. Today, the castle and its park are protected as historical monuments and are managed by the National Property Board. Since no one has lived there for over 100 years, much of the castle has been preserved in its original condition.
