When in Bilbao, you'll almost always pass by the striking Guggenheim Museum. The best view of the large building is from across the river. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a modern art museum in Bilbao, in the Spanish Basque Country. It has an exhibition space of 11,000 square meters and features both a permanent collection and special exhibitions.

Designed by engineer José Antonio Fernández Ordóñez, the work was completed after his death by his son Lorenzo and opened in 2004. It is a very visual and impressive construction, resembling a large dragonfly, and is finished with a cladding of Lapacho wood, specially treated to prevent people from slipping on it. This modern pedestrian bridge, built between the Abandoibarra Walk and the Avenue of the Universities, next to the Deusto University, is dedicated to the priest Pedro Arrupe from Bilbao, a renewer of the Society of Jesus who died in Rome in 1991.

Via the Zubizuri in Bilbao, also called Puente del Campo Volantin, you literally walk from the old to the new city. Together with the Guggenheim Museum, the bridge is the figurehead of the more modern, renovated Bilbao. The Zubizuri was built between 1994 and 1997. In Basque, its name means ‘White Bridge’. The Spanish architect Calatrava developed the modern metal construction with a glass floor, which later turned out to be not very practical. As a result, the city of Bilbao had to spend more than a quarter of a million to cover the bridge with carpet.

From this bridge you have a nice view over the museum. It is also nice to look at the bridge from below, it looks like a spider. The best time to photograph the museum is in the morning otherwise you photograph with backlight
