Valmayor was an ancient village in Valdemorillo that, it seems, once had a significant population and was depopulated following the plague of 1600. In 1648 the village was declared depopulated and its church became a hermitage. Legend has it that the Virgin of Hope appeared to some shepherds and asked them to build a chapel in her honour on this site, and in this way the old parish church, now converted into the Hermitage of Valmayor, was created.

This reservoir is the second one that stores the most water in the entire Community of Madrid. Although it belongs to the Guadarrama basin, it is built on the Aulencia River (which is the main tributary of the Guadarrama). It was decided to build in the mid-sixties due to Madrid's water needs following its demographic growth. Although at first it seemed more logical to build it on the Guadarrama River, it was finally decided to do it on the Aulencia, for several reasons, among which the practical absence of population centers in the area and the granite (and impermeable) bottom where it was located stood out. .
