The Ring of Brodgar is a henge in the British Orkney Islands with a circular stone setting inside. With a diameter of 104 m, it is larger than Stonehenge. Of the original 60 stones, 27 remain. It was probably built in 2700 BC. Admission is free. Parking is available on site.

12월 6, 2023, Broch of Gurness
The Broch of Gurness is a outstanding Neolithic broch in a spectacular location on the shores of Eynhallow Sound. Unlike Skara Brae, at Gurness you can wander through the remains of the village at will. In my opinion Broch of Gurness is head and shoulders above rather better known Skara Brae.

The Neolithic village of Skara Brae is located near the white beach of Skaill Bay. Uncovered by a storm in 1850, the site provides a remarkable insight into life on the Orkney Islands some 5,000 years ago. Visitors can get a vivid impression of the reality of a prehistoric settlement and see old houses equipped with stone beds, dressers and chairs. A replica construction allows visitors to fully understand the interior of a prehistoric house. An informative visitor center offers touchscreen presentations, fact-finding quizzes for kids and adults, and a chance to see artifacts discovered during archaeological digs in the 1970s. There is also a café (which may have limited hours during the winter) and a gift shop selling locally made souvenirs and crafts. (Orkney.com)

7월 4, 2023, Twatt Church
The name of the village to which this church belongs comes from the Old Norse þveit, meaning 'small plot of land'. The Norse word commonly produces the place name element Thwaite in England. The name Twatt is similar to the common English expletive "Twat" (a vulgar word for vulva and also an insulting term meaning a weak or despicable individual). For this reason, Twatt remains a source of entertainment for people outside the parish. The name was ranked No. 4 among the most vulgar-sounding names in Rude Britain, along with its Shetland namesake.

7월 4, 2023, St Peter's Church, Sandwick
Set in a rugged and exposed location, St Peter's offers commanding views over Skaill Bay with Skara Brae in the distance. A simple building, the church's only exterior decoration is a low bell tower with a bulbous finial. The interior is dominated by a towering pulpit that reaches gallery height, flanked by round-headed windows. The austere space powerfully evokes the experience of Presbyterian worship in the 19th century, when more than 500 people filled the building, each with just an 18-inch pew. In the care of Historic Churches Scotland.

6월 30, 2023, Standing Stones of Stenness
Stones of Stenness, also called Standing Stones of Stenness, is a henge stone circle monument dating from the Neolithic Age, located on the southeast side of Loch of Stenness on Mainland, one of Scotland's Orkney Islands. The stone circle, together with Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar and Maeshowe, belongs to the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. The name Stones of Stenness is derived from the Old Norse Steinn-nes, a stone elevation in the landscape. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, this stone circle was also referred to by the most likely romanticized term Temple of the Moon. The oldest known written reference comes from Martin Martin in 1716. In 1841 this term was still in use locally. The Temple of the Sun was used for the Ring of Brodgar. (Wikipedia)

The Ring of Brodgar, also called the Ring of Brogar, located on Mainland (Orkney), together with the Ness of Brodgar, Skara Brae, the Stones of Stenness and Maeshowe, belongs to the Neolithic Heart of Orkney, which has been classified by UNESCO since 1999. the World Heritage List has been added. The ceremonial ring and stone circle is dated to between 2500 and 2000 BC and lies on a narrow isthmus between the Loch of Stenness and the Loch of Harray. Of the original sixty stones, only 36 remain. The stones are not decorated, except for five Norse runes and a cross. The runes form a cryptogram with the common name Bjorn. There is a moat around the circle, which must originally have been 3 meters deep. (Wikipedia)

With a maximum age of 4,700 years, the Ring of Brodgar is a rather young stone circle - at least compared to its neighbors, the Standing Stones of Stenness, which are around 300 years older. Since no extensive excavations have taken place, the scientists can only estimate its age: It is said to have been created between 2700 and 2000 BC.
