Nice stopover on a tour

The church was founded in 1064 AD. Unfortunately, it has been restored to such an extent that it has only limited charm.

Place with a long history. A 15 minute stop is enough. When you're up there, be sure to check out Brough of Bersay and Barony Mill.

The last functioning watermill in the Orkneys. 5,000 year old "primitive" grain is processed here. The miller, who has extensive knowledge, leads tours of the mill for £5 per person. Well worth seeing.

The name of the village to which this church belongs comes from the Old Norse þveit, meaning 'small plot of land'. The Norse word commonly produces the place name element Thwaite in England. The name Twatt is similar to the common English expletive "Twat" (a vulgar word for vulva and also an insulting term meaning a weak or despicable individual). For this reason, Twatt remains a source of entertainment for people outside the parish. The name was ranked No. 4 among the most vulgar-sounding names in Rude Britain, along with its Shetland namesake.
