Keep an eye out for swans and heron as you go across. It is an interesting experience to be on the bridge when a train passes. There is a useful little yellow L-shaped ramp at the side of the steps to wheel a bike up, but it's still hard work if the bike is heavy or loaded (or both!)

Summer 2024 - trail closed, hopefully, not for good. It is well worth its black grading with tricky rock features and great sections of north shore. Miles of smiles ... as they say.

It's much better to cross from the Oykel to here on a gravel bike but it is a lot more enjoyable when done on a mountain bike if traversing from Croick to the Oykel.

Small waterfall, nice spot for a short breather.

The cafe reopened in 2024, the outside seating area is great, made from old whiskey barrel staves but the outside serving area is not always open. There is now a parking fee, so bear that in mind if you are planning to start your ride from the falls.

Original stone bridge over the River Shin, now overgrown and blocked off as it is too dangerous to cross. Nice to look at from the new bridge though.

It is closed off, you can't cross it as it is in a dangerous state and nature is taking it over.

Good views of salmon rivers along here

Grandiose! I cycled through these places with my mouth open in amazement. In this gigantic wilderness reserve of around 100 square km, efforts are being made to restore the original Scottish landscapes.

The start is pleasant and the route is good as far as Lubachoinnich, but shortly afterwards, when you leave the riverbank to cross the mountains and join the river Oykel, it is much less so. A long stretch of bike-pushing: too many gradients and too rough a track.

Crossing the Kyle of Sutherland into or out of Bonar Bridge, there are great views on either side. The 'new' metal bridge is juxtaposed against the ancient town.

Famous cafe in the lower Highlands. Has everything you need for a trip into the wilds. Open until late so you can stock up before bed. Right next to the train station too.

A good surface and hardly a car in sight make this a very nice road to ride along. Continual views of the river also help.

Brunch, lunch, dinner and drinks served with great views across Loch Shin. Outside seating by the loch in the summer and a wood burner for the winter. Open every day 10:00 - 16:00, plus evening meals from 17:30 till late on Fri and Sat evenings.
