The Torre dell'Orologio (Clock Tower) was added to the Palazzo della Ragione in 1472. It boasts a magnificent lunar chronometer, displaying the signs of the zodiac and mean solar time. Its construction was entrusted to Bartolomeo di Manfredi, and it is one of the first mechanically operated clocks. The statue of the Immaculate Virgin beneath the clock face was added in 1639. A ticket (€3) grants access to the interior of the Torre dell'Orologio, which houses a museum of time. The floors display various antique objects related to the theme, including the mechanism of the external clock. The visit becomes more engaging and justifies the price once you reach the top of the tower. This Romanesque church was built in 1081, probably on the ruins of an ancient 4th-century temple. It is located below the level of the Piazza delle Erbe. Its circular shape is said to allude to the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The building was constructed on two levels with a loggia on the upper floor. Some remnants of Byzantine-style frescoes (11th century) are still visible, testifying to the original ornamentation.
