no tips. exhausted with problems with e bike so going for Mountain bike again. I've spent twice the price of the bike new. and some problem still not solved.

This is an amazing local business- high quality produce in the farm shop and a very good cafe too!

The top section is great coming down after Fyfield Common, but the descent down into Avebury is tricky even on a mtb. Once you reach the farm it's been absolutely destroyed by 4x4s and tractors. So good luck. This type of track is my least favourite part of "official" cycling trails. They just whack the signage up and don't do any restoration or introduction of bylaws to prevent offroad vehicles from using them, restricting enjoyment for other users. It's not like there aren't miles and miles of offroad byways around here which could be legislated for multi-use and non-motorised use.

I agree with other comments this is a very slippery path when wet. I lost control a few times but was going slow enough to avoid serious damage.

Crofton Pumping Station advertises that it has the oldest working steam engine in the world. The idea was actually to route the canal through a mountain at a lower altitude using a tunnel. But this project was too expensive and too complex. That's why the pumping station was built. It once reliably filled the canal with water at the geographically highest points of the route.

Even in dry weather, the track is quite rutted between Avebury and Wroughton, so you don't cover the mileage so fast. That isn't a problem, except had accommodation deadlines at the other end. I took country lanes between the Ridgeway, dropping down to Wroughton then skirting Swindon before riding nice country lanes ( including Bishopstone )on the way to Uffington, it's pubs and it's White Horse. I cycles parallel to the King Alfred Trail, but 3/4 mile north , so fairly level with the contours with good views, but able to get to my accommodation in time !

Much of Avebury and the surrounding landscape is owned and cared for by the National Trust and is free to explore for everyone all year round.

Steep climb on lovely gravel following the Wessex Ridgeway up Manton Down. A beast if you're unlucky enough to be riding into a headwind!

Avebury is an official World Heritage Site and the largest stone circle in the world. Creation began around 2800BC, this Neolithic site is bigger than its more famous cousin Stonehenge, just a few miles down the road, and quieter too. Avebury is also quite unique because it is the only stone circle and henge with a village built inside it. You can see the stones from all around the village and surrounding area but you can also walk right up to and amongst the stones. Access to this amazing site is free to all.

The tour passes through Avebury Stone Circle, supposedly the poor relation to Stone Henge but in my mind far far better. Hug a stone for free!!

This mixed use path, part of Sustrans NCN Route 482, follows the disused Chiseldon & Marlborough Railway. The path is almost entirely well-maintained gravel and mostly flat, with some sharp ups and downs at entry/exit points. When dry, it can be easily ridden on a road or city bike (some skills required), but if muddy and wet a Gravel bike or MTB is recommended. Traction is overall very good, but be careful on bends with loose gravel. On a nice, sunny day this is a great trail away from traffic which will put a smile on your face! Always be courteous to other path users, giving ample room to pedestrians and other cyclists.

There’s cows and sometimes a bull(s) in this stretch. The bull seemed largely indifferent but just be aware. It may not be there all the time anyway. I’m not up on farming/bovine activities so maybe they rotate fields.
