It's unbelievable what people have achieved and built in the past (without any technology) - it's simply impressive and breathtaking

Can someone please be happy/laughing with me that Google Translate turns Amy's "henge and timber monument" into "Denkmal für Hühner 🐔" in German? - Great 😂😂😂

Sarsen stones are blocks of sandstone found in large numbers in England, it is a contraction of Saracen stone, where “Saracenic” is equivalent to “pagan”. In this respect, sarsen means something like “heathen stone”, “stone of the heathen”. The most famous sarsen stones can be found here in Stonehenge.

he parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul was founded in the late 11th century. It was given to Salisbury Cathedral c.1115 by Henry I to form part of a living. The value of this church was soon increased by other gifts of property, and within a few years there were canons at Heytesbury. By c.1160 it was established as a collegiate church with a dean and four prebendaries, two each of priests and deacons. A collegiate church was effectively a 'mother church' with resident priests whose task it was to go out into the wider community as missionaries, with the aim of encouraging new 'daughter churches'. In the 13th century the holder of the deanery became, and remained, the Dean of Salisbury. The college at Heytesbury and its property belonged to him. Most parishes came under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of the Diocese, but Heytesbury belonged to the Dean and was therefore known as a peculiar. The Cathedrals Act of 1840 dissolved the college and abolished the prebends. The church itself is described by Pevsner as 'a large and impressive church, but an over-restored one'. The external view is dominated by its low, massive and square Norman tower in the centre. Most of the building dates from the late 12th, the 13th and the 15th centuries.

An excellent campsite open all year round, and just off the King Alfreds Way. There are clean indoor showers and toilets, as well as a laundry room and washing up area. You will need 50p to use the showers. There's also an option of staying in a pod or self contained apartment. Within a five minute walk is a friendly pub specialising in Italian food.

You can take a nice cross country hike from the interesting historic Woodhenge ancient monument to the global icon that is Stonehenge. If you do this hike then you will save the parking and entry charges at Stonehenge (£30 ish). If you pay you get to go closer to Stonehenge (about 30m) but you get to within 70m on this walking route. You simply end up on the other side of the fence to the ticket purchasers. Plus you get a good walk out of it. Depends on what you want? Parking at start point. Hike Route - https://www.komoot.com/tour/1058100383

Really nice campsite to stay and right on the King Alfreds Way. Very friendly clean and well run. You will need 50p for the showers. There is a well stocked garage five minutes walk offering coffees and all the food needed for a days cycling. Pub is also five minutes walk only did pizza whilst we were there, friendly service and excellent pizza.

We first considered whether we should save the entrance fee and use the outer path. However, we were not so sure about the parking situation from the northern entrance, which is why we decided to pay the entrance fee and took the bus from the visitor center to the bus stop right in front of the stones. We were a lot closer to it, especially on the south and west side, than the path of the non-payers, which leads past the stones at a greater distance. Since we will probably not have this chance again to look at the stones up close, we have not regretted the entry. By the way, cheaper with National Trust!

Brilliant campsite in Tilshead within walking distance of the (very good) pub. They're bike friendly and you can even upgrade to a pod or hut if you don't fancy camping! Great facilities, although you will need some coins for the showers! More at: https://bradesacre.co.uk/

There are various, partly complementary, partly contradictory hypotheses about the reason and ultimate purpose of this highly complex system. These range from a self-portrait of a prehistoric alliance between two formerly hostile tribal organizations to a burial site, an astronomical observatory including a calendar for the sowing and harvesting times and a religious place of worship.

The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a beautiful Grade I-listed building in the heart of Heytesbury. A church has existed on this spot since the Domesday Book of 1086 but there was likely something here long before then. The church you see today was built in the 12th century, modified over the next 400 years, and then restored significantly in the Victorian era.

Lying within the Stonehenge World Heritage Site, Woodhenge is a Neolithic Class II henge and timber circle monument. It wasn't discovered until 1926 when a pilot took an aerial photo of the area. The monument was probably built around 2300 BC as a large burial mound. The site is managed by English Heritage and free to visit. You can visit anytime during daylight hours. One can measure his powers at this Sarsonstein. To get the stone moving, I still need 80 times.

Stonehenge was built in three phases, during which the stones were changed during the last phase often. The effort for the processing of the stones with the resources at that time was enormous. The origin of the first plant goes up to the time around 3100 v. Chr. Back. was built as a circular wall with a diameter of 110 meters and wooden structures in the middle. About 2500 BC The wooden buildings were replaced by stone buildings and the bluestone used here came from a quarry about 380 kilometers away in the Preseli Mountains of Wales. The approximately five-ton stones were probably transported by rafts across the River Avon to Stonehenge. The last phase of the construction lasted about 2300 to 1600 BC. During which the bluestones were rearranged and supplemented with even larger sandstones, the sarsen stones weighing up to 50 tons. Also more Walle and ditches were added to the plant of Stonehenge. After this final stage of construction, the monument of Stonehenge had three stone circles and a U-shaped structure in the center and was surrounded by two walls.
