Cute little bridge. Gravel path leads through the Frome wetlands back to Dorchester.

The old road is still here and easily rideable on any bike. But as with most cycle infrastructure, is badly signposted and the junction off the A35 is sketchy, forcing you to brake sharply and avoid the bushes when leaving the A35, or come to a halt and wait for a gap in the cars if you're joining the A35.

Nice to look at although you cannot go into the grounds. I think you can rent it through the Landmark Trust. Woodsford Castle is a rare survivor of one side of a medieval fortified manor house. Standing near the River Frome the thatched roof is reputed to be the largest in Dorset. There is a convenient to pull in to have look.

Moreton House was built by James Frampton in 1744. The Frampton family are for ever associated with the Tolpuddle Martyrs – a later James was not only the first to draw the authorities’ attention to the six proto-trade unionists but was a member of the jury at their trial – yet for six centuries they have been generally benevolent landlords of a large estate which included most of the village of Moreton.

This is the surviving part of a 14th-century castle, a rambling wing of great interest and charm, deep in Hardy country just outside Dorchester. Its roof has one of the largest expanses of thatch in the county. Just one side of the quadrangular castle, built in 1370 and probably added to an existing group of buildings, remains today.

You can do a nice little walk here to get to some ponds and bird hide viewing area

This is right on the Lawrence trail - an track, walking route - loop which runs across the heath, Bovington, Moreton. Highly recommended

Carries London Road over the River Frome towhich stood a few hundred feet to the north. Two metal plaques threaten transportation for life for anyone found guilty of wilfully damaging the bridge. Featured in Far From the Madding Crowd (1874) and The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886) by Thomas Hardy. The bridge marks the boundary between town and country. Then, as now, Casterbridge “… had no suburbs—in the ordinary sense. Country and town met at a mathematical line.” Beyond lie the water meadows and corn fields Hardy calls Durnover Moor. A small path through the meadows to the north side of Grey’s Bridge leads up river 50 yards or so to the pool called Ten Hatches Weir. Here, Michael Henchard intended to drown himself, after finding his own effigy floating in the water.

the Quayside of historic Wareham is worth spending a little time at as well as going into to the church.

Not recommended (July 2022). Has been poorly resurfaced with rough chippings, making very hard work for a road bike if southbound. Mostly tolerable if northbound, i.e. mainly downhill, but still not great.
