Military batteries on the Italian-French border

As a commemorative plaque on the chapel wall explains, the village of Grand Croix is the only "original" village not to have been submerged by the dam. Unfortunately, all that remains of the historic village, once a stopover for Ferrera's porters and a station on the Fell railway, is ruins: the site is abandoned, with the only human activity being the nearby hotel and restaurant. The chapel, however, is well preserved. It is effectively a ghost town, with the gloomy and slightly eerie atmosphere of these abandoned places. Not far from the main road, it is worth a detour. It can also be reached by descending the dirt road that starts from the western end of the dam.
